Sharon Eden-Smith, B.Sc., B.Ed.
Music Instructor - Piano, Singing (Voice), Piano Keyboard, & Theory
Sharon Eden-Smith, B.Sc., B.Ed., is a singing, piano, electronic piano keyboard and music theory teacher, vocal coach & performer who has her credentials in music through the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She was employed, as a teacher, with the Calgary Catholic School Board in Calgary for 12 years & holds a Permanent Professional Teaching Certificate in the Province of Alberta. Her teaching experience also includes a non-traditional classroom setting as a summer camp instructor for the Calgary Zoo. Her experience & certification allows her to seamlessly incorporate effective classroom techniques into her private musical instruction, while accounting for different learning styles (i.e. auditory, visual, kinesthetic) & learning needs (e.g. gifted, ADD, ADHD, LD, Dyslexia, Downs Syndrome, etc.). Her classroom experience allows her to meet each student’s learning needs & gives her the ability to work with students to establish short & long term attainable goals to build confidence.
Sharon's classroom experience & her work as a Music Therapist with the Calgary Alzheimer's Society, Club 36, aids in her ability to teach. Her pattern based teaching style mirrors current teaching strategies used in multiple subjects of today's curricula. This helps younger adult students apply their analytic & synthesis skills, already acquired in school, to their music study.
With older adult students, Sharon provides target points to explain how teaching has changed over the years. This helps many adults (particularly seniors) revisit how they were taught in the past, reconnect with their most effective learning strategies & incorporate some of today's educational strategies into their prior knowledge. Enhancing positive outcomes in this way ensures educational success & moves adults forward to a place of greater comfort, confidence & accelerated learning.
Sharon has performed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Songfests & the Kiwanis Festival in Calgary. She performed at the Nexen Building in 2019, the 2019 Annual Banff Trail Community Association Christmas Party, and the 2016 Annual Christmas Brunch for the Calgary Welsh Society. She has sung for the Canadian Female Box Lacrosse Nationals, Shoot for the Stars Hockey Tournament (The Children's Wish Foundation), Crosscheck Cancer Hockey Tournament (Kids Cancer Care) & in Noted Music Studio Concerts. She has performed for the Calgary Zoo as a Naturalist Interpreter, was a member of the University Chorus at the University of Calgary & has sung in various church choirs in Canada.
Sharon's drama & musical experience extends to Silicon Valley, California, United States. She was a member of the clown troop, The Kings' Players, has sung for Youth Focus Inc. (Santa Clara County, CA) as Youth Ambassador for Santa Clara County (Silicon Valley), sang at the Santa Clara County Fair & was the director & member of mass choirs at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA.
Sharon has a passion for computers. She incorporates technology into her teaching strategies for piano, voice (singing), electronic keyboard, & theory instruction. Because an electronic keyboard is a type of computer itself & can connect to a computer to produce additional results, training in both music & computers is necessary when teaching electronic keyboarding.
Sharon’s varied teaching & performance experiences have proven invaluable in her private studio in Calgary. They have shown her the importance of an integrated and holistic approach to teaching music. As a result, she incorporates theory & music history directly into the practical skills that she teaches. This gives her students a greater ability to see the links between their performances & the background knowledge necessary to enhance those performances.
Sharon also uses aspects of Alexander Technique (e.g. breath control, body posture, focused movement, proper tension, etc., while singing, playing piano or keyboard). As a result, her students become more effective performers. Her work as a Music Therapist with members of Club 36 at the Alzheimer's Society of Calgary has reinforced her belief in the effectiveness of this integrated & holistic approach to teaching & music.
